Horseshoe Factoids
There has been much speculation over the years as to where and when the practice of shoeing horses was invented.
There is some evidence that as early as 500 BC the Druids were shoeing their horses. These people were intelligent and very capable of manipulating metals so would certainly have been able to shoe their horses.
Although shoeing with nailed-on iron shoes may have been a very ancient invention, it did not become popular until around the time of the Crusades (1096-1270).
Iron was rare and valuable enough to be used for money in some cultures such as the ancient Celts.
Until this century iron was never discarded, it was constantly reused.
